I couldn't find a good photo of DJ Cheese to use for this post, so instead here's a rather odd cross promotion between Numark and Marvel Comics.

In my ongoing process of putting together a tracklisting for the upcoming mixtape, I've been spending a lot of time digging in the crates (or more accurately, a box full of Maxell tapes) to find material from old school artists that came out of New Jersey. Last night I unearthed a copy of DJ Cheese's performance at the 1986 DMC DJ Championships, a 10-minute scratch routine that the Plainfield, NJ native performed to become the first American winner.

These days, the technical skills on display at the DMC World Competitions make Cheese's performance seem almost rudimentary by comparison. What he did at the time, though, was groundbreaking. Up until that point, the Disco Mix Club and its annual World DJ Championship focused entirely on the mixing of the (primarily disco) tracks. Cheese showed up to the Championship in '86 and was the first dj to ever incorporate scratching into his performance. After that, the entire focus of the DMCs shifted to scratch battles.

Here's the full performance. Due to the file size, I had to break it up into two chunks:

DJ Cheese - Part 1

DJ Cheese - Part 2

And oh yeah, the greatest dj battle ever? Q vs. Maj.
