Since the
Ron Artest post was so popular (shout out to
screenhead and its visitors), I'm posting another mp3 of an NBA player displaying his lyrical prowess on the mic.
This one is from Shaquille O'Neal a.k.a. Big Aristotle a.k.a. Shaq Fu a.k.a. The Diesel a.k.a. Out for a month with a Toe Injury. Back in 2003, for some reason Shaq decided to wage a verbal war with Virginia rapper
Mad Skillz. This track is only about a minute long. I'm assuming the ghost writer that Shaq hired to come up with the lyrics on this one realized how ridiculous the concept of Shaq battle rapping is, and just gave up after the first verse.
Hard to find a "best" line from this one, but I guess it would be this part:
Don't respond
Don't say nothing
Just layoff
Give this autograph to your mom and just watch me in the playoffs
There's also a fair amount of cussing from the Diesel on this track. Surprising if you (like me) own his entire collection of previous records, where you won't hear any curse words. In fact, prior to this one, the harshest lyric Shaq ever dropped was "Change my name to Deion 'cause I'm MotherFreakin' Primetime."
Historical note: After Shaq put out this diss track on a bunch of mixtapes, Mad Skillz put out a response record with Ben Wallace (who plays for the Detroit Pistons) doing backup vocals. Shaq then went out and lost to Wallace's Pistons in the NBA Finals.
Here it is:
