It's hard to believe that it's been almost six months since we first started putting up the entries for
Bring Me the REMIX of Zilla Rocca, the follow up to Zilla's solo debut album. The response has been great, so we've decided to wrap up all of the songs, along with a few bonus cuts, and make them available as a free mixtape. The above image (based on a photo from Jimmy Giambrone) should tell you all you need to know, but I'll offer up the official promo blurb for
Bring Me the REMIX of Zilla Rocca: The Mixtape:
In the fall of 2008, Clean Guns emcee Zilla Rocca released the album Bring Me the Head of Zilla Rocca. Described as, "A loose, funky hodgepodge of battle raps, musings on strip clubs, falling for older women, and reflections on the city of Philadelphia," the album served as Zilla's debut as a solo artist. Shortly after its release, Zilla reached out to several of his favorite producers and asked them to remix each song on the album. Over the course of three months, each remix made its debut on 33jones.com.
All of the remixes have been collected into a new album, Bring Me the REMIX of Zilla Rocca, with bonus material that has never been released before!
Besides the fact that the mp3s are now available as one full download, you'll also get the benefit of hearing the songs at the actual, higher, bit rate that they were originally recorded (meaning, it'll sound even better than before). As further incentive to download the mixtape, we've included a few of Zilla's own remixes (Portishead, Amy Winehouse and Jamie Lidell) that we didn't post during the original run.
Also, as part of this mixtape release, we're kicking off a contest, cleverly titled
The CONTEST of Zilla Rocca, for any producers or emcees out there that want their music to be heard. Download the mixtape and you'll find the acapella of
Pepsi With Ice and the instrumental for
Get That Gun. Throw a verse of your own over the instrumental or take the acapella and remix it with a new beat. Submit whatever you've got to
thirtythreejones@gmail.com. The two best entries will get some sort of merchandise (t-shirts, maybe a signed glamour shot of Mr. Rocca), and if your submission is up to snuff you'll even get a shot at appearing on a future Beat Garden project.
I've set up a page for the mixtape where you can stream all of the songs, find links to download the mixtape, see the artwork for the mixtape and find links to all of the artists that were involved with the project, over at
thirtythreejones.com. Or, if you just want to skip straight to the download,
here's the link to it on sharebee and
here it is on sendspace.
And in case you haven't gotten enough of Zilla and his remixes, I'll be putting up (relatively) new material from some of the producers and artists that contributed to the tape over the next week or two. Some really good stuff is coming from Mally, Griff, Haji and maybe a few others. Check back for that.
Finally, shout out to everyone who downloaded the remixes when they first came out and for everyone who left some feedback on them, it's been greatly appreciated! Now go download the full mixtape (even if you already have the originals!), and tell a friend about it. Thanks!
