(Image - Jak: Artists & Producers To Watch Vol 5)
For the past year or so, my man Laks has been passing along mixtapes that he's put together featuring a gang of independent emcees and producers. I'm not sure how he does it, but he manages to dig up gems from artists that are barely known outside of their local circles for every release. As enjoyable as the mixtapes have been, I have a bad habit of forgetting to post them despite the fact that each of the tapes has stayed in heavy rotation on my own iPod. His latest release, Volume 5, came out in January and once again I never got around to posting it. I thought it was worth featuring even several months after the fact, though, as I suspect many of you have not yet heard it.

The tape has thirty two tracks and, as you might expect given the large amount of material from independent artists, the quality of the music is not quite consistent throughout. Yet there are a surprising amount of good songs on here, and if you're into underground rap it would be well worth your while to pick this one up. Featured below are three of my favorite cuts from the tape. The track from Las Vegas emcee Bhon, in particular, stood out.

Bhon featuring Shuanise - One Hit Wonder (produced by Elaquent)

Spesh K featuring Sadat X and Moka Only - That's It Y'All (produced by Stinson)

The Problemaddicts featuring Platypus Complex - Money (produced by DJ Theory)
