It's been three years, two albums and a handful of guest appearances with Clean Guns since Mally, arguably the most promising artist to come out of the North Star state since Prince changed his name to a symbol, first came to my attention thanks to my man Marc. Mal's had great punchlines since day one - my favorite, in reference to the demographics of his school: 'it reminds me of The View, it's fo(u)r white women' - but over the past couple of years he's polished his skills as an emcee to the point that there are only a handful of unsigned artists who are on his level right now. He recently dropped the "612" suffix from his name, a reference to his Minneapolis area code, which in a way is symbolic of how far he's come as an emcee. Though he's still repping Minnesota, his talents have outgrown the need for a regional identifier.

He still doesn't get the level of attention that he deserves from a lot of the sites out there, but eventually the recognition will come. In the meantime, he continues to lace those of us in the know with some great material. Here's his latest song, produced by Milwaukee's Radio Raheim:

What a Life will be on Mally's next mixtape, Return of the Nice, due out this summer. Luckily we don't have to wait that long to hear some new material from the M.A.Double, as he's also going to release an E.P. with Mydus, The Passion, sometime in the next month or two. He also dropped a new verse for an encore installment of Bring Me the Remix of Zilla Rocca, which we'll post up at the end of the week. The verse is fire, so keep an eye out for it.
