In case you missed it, Souled On Music has been running a week long series in honor of Valentine's Day, Love Lockdown, in which a bunch of guest writers have chosen their favorite songs about love. Scholar, who's been part of my e-fam since day one, was kind enough to allow me to participate in the series. I was originally going to do a post about the least romantic love songs ever, but the list ended up being just a bunch of R Kelly songs (#1: You Remind Me (of my Jeep)) so I scrapped that idea. I ended up focusing on the three reasons why Valentine's Day is my least favorite holiday. It's probably the most personal thing I've written for any blog, so if for some reason you've been waiting to hear about my love life, this may be your only chance to read about it. Since the average Souled On reader knows far more about soul music than I do, I stayed with hip hop for the playlist, with songs from Dilla, Jay-Z, Mos Def, The Roots, Bless 1 and Pharcyde (remixed with Led Zep):

Scholar's request was pretty open-ended, with the only request being that we try to keep our song lists to five tracks. I did my best to stay under the limit, but even after including a sixth song there were still a few others that I would have liked to include. First among them would be Slick Rick's Mistakes of a Woman in Love With Other Men, which I ended up cutting out because I seem to be one of the few people who actually enjoyed Ricky's brief foray into radio friendly House music. Since I didn't include it in the original post, I figured I should at least post it up here:

I highly recommend checking out the rest of the entries for the Love Lockdown series. There's enough music to last for a decade's worth of Valentine's Days. My favorite of the bunch is Heavy Soul Brutha's Quiet Storm mix.
