(Image - MAGr from Camden, NJ)
About a year ago, I asked Nico and Zilla to put me up on a few groups from around their home base of Philly that were worth checking out. They gave a particularly glowing recommendation for a duo out of Jersey, Camden's MAGr ("Major"). I was told that DistantStarr and Al Mighty, the pair of emcees that make up MAGr, were at that time signed to a record label out in Ireland, so it seemed unlikely that there would be an official release in the U.S. any time soon. I never got the full details of their label deal (I'm not even sure if Zilla was being serious when he said it, though I suspect there's an interesting story behind the Camden group's discovery over in Eire if true), but it would seem they have moved on as I got a promo from their manager announcing plans for their debut album, No News is Good News.

I would have become a fan of MAGr's strictly on the strength of the fact that they actually rep NJ, as they're one of the few groups out of South Jersey not claiming to be from the other side of the Delaware River. It's almost a bonus that these two can actually rap (quite well, in fact) in addition to showing some love for my home state. Add in a consistently good selection of beats, and I'm sold. Here are the two promo songs I received over the weekend:

MAGr - Buttafly (produced by Hudson Mohawke) (d/l link)

MAGr - Dealings (produced by Tha S Ence) (d/l link)

These two songs were released in an effort to promote their upcoming album, No News is Good News. The album doesn't seem to have an official release date yet, but I'll post further details on it when/if I get them. In the meantime, you can hear more from MAGr through the following MySpace links:
