It's been nearly a decade since I first heard Jojo Pellegrino spit a freestyle on one of DJ Clue's old mixtapes, and it's been almost that long since he first announced he was working on his debut album. The usual record label drama, financing problems and various other issues kept the album on the shelf for years, yet up until recently I've been looking forward to it with the level of expectation that most other bloggers have for Dre's Detox or Raekwon's OB4CL2.
Things began coming together for Joey last year, as he hooked back up with his old manager from Violater Records and released the single Mash Out, one of the better songs to come out in 2007 despite it flying completely under the radar of the mainstream media. Even after an eight year hiatus, Jojo remained as lyrically sharp as he had always been and continued to rap with his own authentic Mafioso-style take on gangsta rap. It seemed like there was a good chance that his album would actually live up to my expectations, but after hearing this latest single, Out Of Control, those expectations have been drastically reduced. I appreciate the fact that, after having your album pushed back for several years, you're likely to reach the point where you'll do whatever the label tells you to do if it that's what it takes to get it out the door, but it's hard for me to overstate just how disappointing it is to hear Pellegrino jump on the autotuned bandwagon (a year late, no less).
