Nice & Smooth - Old to the New

Though it never received as much attention - and was nowhere near as good as - their classic album Ain't a Damn Thing Changed, Nice & Smooth's Jewel of the Nile remains one of my favorite albums from the first half of the 90's. There were some questionable choices as far as the production on the album, and their sense of humor seemed to be toned down in their attempt to create a more crossover friendly release, but the two lead singles from the album still hold up well after all these years. The above video for Old to the New is loaded with cameos, so keep an eye out for a rather young looking Fat Joe, along with Puffy, Grandmaster Flash and Doug E. Fresh.

In the following video for their second single from the album, Return of the Hip Hop Freaks, you'll notice an issue of The Source with Tupac on the cover featured prominently. Prior to his murder, Pac was in negotiations with the group to sign them to his Makavelli label. Though they only recorded a handful of tracks together, Pac and Greg Nice did spend enough time in the studio to record at least one song.
