Last Friday, Jay-Z held a concert at Continental Airlines Arena (the NJ Nets home court). He had been talking this up for about a month on Hot 97 and Power 105, saying that he was going to "DECLARE WAR" on a bunch of people.
A lot of rumors were going around as to who would be the target. Cam'ron, Jim Jones, 50 and G-Unit, Game and G-U-NOT, Dame, Kells, the list grew every day.
At the concert, though, Jay-Z did not call anybody out. He said that he instead decided to declare peace. He had P. "Maintain the Sexy" Diddy perform
All About the Benjamins with the LOX, Beanie Sigel joined State Property on stage, and then at the end Jay-Z and Nas performed Dead Presidents together. To close the show, Kanye and Lebron James appeared on stage. Not sure if those two had beef to squash with each other, or if Jay-Z is just continuing his recruitment of Lebron to
Jigga's NBA team.
I wasn't at the concert, and I'm sure I would have been pretty amped up to see all of these people on stage together. I know a lot of heads out there have been waiting for Jay-Z and Nas to come together. But I don't know...in my head, I don't hear a track with vocals from Jay-Z and Nas working out too well. You'd have Nas dropping his pseudo scientific flow and then Jay rapping about lear jets. Doesn't mesh too well.
Also consider that both of them broke out of their lyrical slumps when they started dissing each other. I hope we're not returning to the
pink suit and
sunshine days.
Here is a
MTVnews article with more details on the show. Really, after reading that article, it should be MTV "news" in quotes. Not that I expect Wolf Blitzer to be handling the reporting over there, but I think they must have just picked a random groupie from Jay-Z's posse and told him to summarize the event.
To commerate the joining of Jay-Z and Nas,
here is the live version (mp3) of Jay-Z performing
Takeover at the 2001 Summer Jam concert. This was the first time anyone had heard this song, and as you will hear, the crowd goes nuts.
Jay-Z is having another concert on Friday. There's still a chance he might go after somebody then. We'll see.
Oh yeah, one more thing. I was watching MTV yesterday and they were doing a promo for November's "New Music Month." They said one of the new videos would be from Jay-Z. New album coming?
