It's hard to pinpoint exactly when Sean Price became the go to rapper for random guest verses, but it seems like almost every underground (east coast) emcee to break onto the scene over the past couple of years has sought out the Ruckness Monster for a quick sixteen bars at the start of their careers. While Sean P. has no doubt been a huge influence on the underground, I suspect his increasingly prolific rate of guest appearances is more the result of the fact that he charges a fairly reasonable fee for appearances than anything else. The upshot of this is that every couple of months we get to hear new material from Sean, even if it often gets jammed in between two verses from an emcee we're likely never to hear from again.
Sean Price makes his latest guest appearance on a track with Boston emcee XL (no relation to Chino that I'm aware of), which will be appearing on XL's upcoming album Beast Coast. XL manages to hold his own on the song, matching Sean's aggression with some tough talk lyrics of his own. He's a more than competent emcee, but I can't shake the feeling that he seems to be doing an impression of Xzibit. That being said, XL does show some potential here and I'll be keeping an eye out for his album, but I'll need to hear XL carry a song on his own without the help of a guest rapper before I can make a final judgment. Peep:
Apologies for putting up the "clean" version of the track, it's what the promoter gave me. You'll be able to hear Sean Price and XL curse up a storm on the actual album version. For more from XL, stop by his MySpace page.
