About a year ago, a kid out of Santa Barbara calling himself Deacon LF sent me a handful of instrumentals that he had been working on. I was blown away by how original the beats sounded, sampling a wide variety of instruments that I had never really heard before on a hip hop track. When I wrote about him last fall, the best comparison I could come up with was the moody, atmospheric sounds of DJ Shadow, in the days before Shadow became infatuated with hyphy. I haven't heard much from Deacon lately, but I went by his MySpace page recently and saw that he had a few new instrumentals available to download. Have a listen:

And for those of you eagerly awaiting a status update on the site: the database issues seem to have been resolved. If we make it through the night without any further problems, everything should be back to normal (until next month, when we start the cycle all over again).
