Every couple of months I get a message from Staten Island emcee Jojo Pellegrino announcing that he has released a new song. Invariably, it turns out to be some old mixtape track that he put out years earlier, but JJP remains one of my favorite emcees despite the fact that he has yet to release an official album, so I always check out whatever he puts up even though I know it's probably a couple of years old. Such is the case with the latest announcement that I received from Jojo, promoting a track called Shut the F Up. A quick search on google suggests that this may have been a mixtape cut from 2005, but I've never heard it before. It may be old, but it's one of the best "new" songs I've heard from him:
Pellegrino claims that he is on the verge of finally releasing his debut album; I have my doubts about that, but if it ever does come out I suspect it will be a classic. If you want to keep up to date with his now eight year-long quest to drop the Flawless Execution LP, hit up his myspace page.
In other news, I've had a ton of promos piling up in my inbox. With the holiday weekend rapidly approaching, I probably won't have time to do full features on all of them, so I'm just going to post a few of them here and let y'all form your own opinions on them:
This is off of Tame One's upcoming album Da Ol' Jersey Bastard, a fitting title for the album as he seems to be channeling the late, great O.D.B. (with just a touch of Craig Mack). The song's dope, I just wish he would put aside his differences with El Da Sensai so we can get an Artifacts reunion album.
I'm not really feeling the R&B singing on this one (not that Maya doesn't have a nice voice, it just doesn't really fit in with the beat), but I'll put up with it to hear a new verse from Immortal. The song is off of Maya's new mixtape, Taste This!, which you can find more info on over at her myspace.
Spencer Bellamy, the man behind the classic Tried By 12, still hasn't lost his touch. For the latest incarnation of the East Flatbush Project, he's hooked up with Stress, an emcee from around my way. This song is off of EFP's oft-delayed album, which looks to be back on track now that the group has been signed to Amalgam Digital.
And finally, Adult Swim and Chocolate Industries have put out a free album featuring Vast Aire, the Cool Kids and a bunch of artists I've never heard of before. The Vast Aire track's not too bad, and I suppose if you're into the Cool Kids you'll dig their song. Click here to download the full album, World Wide Renewal Program.
