It wouldn't be a week at 33jones if we didn't feature some new music from the best group in Philly (well, the best group in Philly that doesn't have a Porn Historian/Drummer, anyway), so I'm hitting you off with a double dose from Clean Guns. Both songs feature a guest appearance by MAGr, two emcees repping Camden, NJ, a city notorious for its 2004 anointment as "America's Most Dangerous City." I hadn't heard of MAGr prior to last week, though I have every intention of keeping an eye on them from this point forward, as the duo show a lot of promise as you'll soon hear. The first song is off of Nico's debut album No Beast So Fierce (a cd that you really need to add to your collection, if you haven't already):
The second track is off of Zilla's upcoming mixtape, Bring Me The Head of Zilla Rocca. We'll have more details on that in the future, but for now just sit back and listen to how well Mr. Rocca flipped the sample from the Rasputin's Stash song Mr. Cool:
You may remember that same sample was used on the intro to Jim Jones' We Fly High (Ballin'), one of the few times I can recall an intro having more replay value than the song itself. The Clean Guns version is unlikely to get as much radio play as the Dirt Angel's, but you can't tell me it doesn't make far better use of Mr. Cool. It's so good, in fact, I'm even willing to overlook Nico's jab at my blogging peoples.
Congratulations, by the way, to Philadelphia resident and 33Jones reader SP, who won last week's contest for the free album from Nico.
If you still haven't copped Nico's album, well, what are you waiting for? You can grab a copy over at cdbaby. And if you want to find out more about Clean Guns, stop by Zilla's blog Clap Cowards, where you can read all about Nico and Zilla's bad taste in beer (and their trip to Vegas).
