There's a thread over at wutang-corp that is mandatory reading for anyone with even the slightest interest in the history of this whole hip hop thing. It's filled with dozens of links to audio clips of some classic live performances, emcee battles and dj competitions from the old school days - highlights include Grandmaster Caz vs. Melle Mel vs. King Sun, Cold Crush Brothers Vs. Roxanne Shante vs. Frukwon (of the Gravediggaz/Stetsasonic)
The battle heats up around the 4:00 mark. I believe Roxanne lost the competition, but she murders Frukwon on the mic.
Ronan vs. MC Serch - 1988 New Music Seminar
This battle is from Serch's pre-3rd Bass days. Not sure who the other guy is; his name is either "Ronan" or "Ronin" (as in, the 47 Ronin).
The files were pretty big, so I had to lower the bitrates. The original thread has better versions of them. Shout out to memoryman for hooking up the links.
