Memphis Bleek has always been something of a disappointment to me. He's been down with Jay-Z since Reasonable Doubt, and appeared on every album since, except for In My Lifetime Vol. 1. Now you might think this was actually a good move by Memph, since Jay's second album is hated on by almost everyone. This wasn't actually Memphis' choice though, as apparently Jigga put him on timeout for a year after he started skipping school.

Bleek released a few solo albums of his own, but they never live up to the hype. There's always a couple of hot tracks on each album, but then the rest of the songs are barely demo quality. Its like Jay-Z gives him all of the leftover beats from his albums.

Still, you have to appreciate the fact that Memphis Bleek is always out repping for his man. Sometimes this leads to him saying something stupid, but never mind that.

I guess what I'm trying to say here is that I'm still holding out hope that Memph is going to put a solid album eventually. Maybe not Reasonable Doubt-quality, but at least an album that's good enough on its own without having Jay-Z put one of his own singles on the album to promote it.

So anyway here's a Memphis Bleek freestyle that he did on Clue's old radio show on Hot 97. I think this was from around '98, rapping over the Beatnut's Off the Hook beat: Memphis Bleek Freestyle (mp3)
