Nearly a year ago a kid from Dekalb, Illinois, going by the name of TkS ("That kid Shered" a.k.a. Nick Arcade) passed along a couple of songs that he had been working on. They didn't really grab my attention at first - his delivery is perhaps best described as "soft-spoken," with his voice at times fading into the background by the end of each bar. His presence was equal parts awkward and raw on the mic, yet I stuck with it, largely because I loved the beat on one of the songs that he produced, Be Alright. With a sparse loop that sounds like it was lifted directly from a dingy, smoke-filled piano lounge, the song managed to leave me feeling a twinge of depression despite the overall positive message in the lyrics. It's an interesting effect for a hip hop track.
I held off on putting the songs up on the site due to the fact that the handful of friends I tested them out on were not particularly enthusiastic in their reviews. My friends, devoted as they are to all things Dipset and D-Block, were perhaps something other than the target demographic for TkS' music, however. Some of you have shown a willingness to be a little more open minded, so I thought it was finally time to give them a chance. Let me know what you think:
