Last week my man Biz over at SpliffHuxtable kicked off a series on Old School instrumentals by dropping a link to an incredible beat tape by J Armz and Cut Master DC. The tape, an 80's edition of J Armz's ongoing How To Be An MC series, is packed with some of the greatest instrumentals from that decade or any other. I suspect some of you already grabbed a copy of it, but if not head on over to Spliff's and check it out. I know some of you need to hear actual tracks before you'll commit to a two minute download, so here are a couple of instrumentals from the tape:
The second instrumental, Knowledge Me, is perhaps most notable for the fact that it was produced by Doctor Dré, a.k.a. "the other Dr. Dre," former cohost of Yo! MTV Raps. His group, Original Concept, released an album in 1988 on Def Jam, "Straight From the Basement of Kooley High." The big hit off of that album was Pump That Bass.
Update - As Wax pointed out in the comments, the Original Concept beat was later jacked by Masta Ace for his single Born To Roll.
