With the original having been released almost three months ago, I imagine that most of you are instinctively rolling your eyes at the announcement of yet another remix of Jay-Z's American Gangster, but I'm pretty sure that this one will at least appeal to the old school heads in the crowd. Put together by Vancouver deejays Flipout and Jayswing (aka "THOSE MF's"), Classic Gangster takes the self-proclaimed Eighties baby back to his roots, laying Jay's American Gangster vocals over some classic beats from the Reagan Era.

By now we've all heard Hova lyrically live out his Denzel fantasies over just about every type of beat conceivable, but this mixtape is worth a listen even for those of you suffering from remix fatigue. I must confess that hearing Jay-Z rap over BDP instrumentals - My Philosophy and Stop the Violence, with KRS-1 voiceovers intact! - fulfills one of the items on my hip hop wishlist, and there are some other great remixes with beats jacked from D-Nice, Public Enemy and Slick Rick.

Two of the best cuts from the mixtape:

Jigga vs. BDP - Pray (THOSE MF's remix)

Jigga vs. N.W.A. - American Gangster (THOSE MF's remix)

That second track uses N.W.A.'s Gangsta and Straight Outta Compton (though if you didn't recognize those beats, please hand in your g pass on the way out).
