For about the past six months, my man Bless 1 has been telling me about a producer that he met through MySpace, a Parisian going by the name of Lokid. The two of them worked together on the Digital Invaders album last summer (a great album which can still be had for free right here), and have continued to collaborate through the internet over the ensuing months. Bless is a great producer in his own right, so when he speaks highly of a fellow beatmaker, it's a recommendation that's not to be taken lightly. When he passed along a link to Lokid's new instrumental album, Oldies and Cakes, I had high expectations for it, expectations that have been fulfilled after a couple of days of repeated listening.

The songs that Lokid has put together for Oldies and Cakes are layered and complex, strong enough to stand on their own without vocals over them, creating an album that succeeds in being far more entertaining for your ears than you might expect from an instrumental album. As much as I love them, I'll be the first to admit that, due to their reliance on the repetition of break beats, hip hop instrumentals can become monotonous after more than a few minutes of listening. Lokid overcomes this by mixing in some great samples and vinyl cuts, making it unlikely that you'll skip over any of the twenty-six songs featured on the album.

I'm putting up three tracks from the album. Bless picked the first one, the other two are my own selections:

Lokid - Night Job

Lokid - Highlights

Lokid - Toasted Samples

I'm told that a sequel to the Digital Invaders album is in the works, but in the meantime you can hear more of Lokid's beats over at his MySpace page.
