Over the past couple of weeks, I've been getting a bunch of promos for Blue Note Records' upcoming album
Droppin' Science: Greatest Samples from the Blue Note Lab. Blue Note's archive of jazz and funk albums have been sampled heavily by various hip hop producers over the years - Marley Marl in particular came up with some of his best work through the use of their catalog - and this album features thirteen of their greatest tracks. As part of the promotional push for the album, they've been giving out free streams of the songs. I'm a sucker for classic hip hop samples, so I figured I'd put them up and give the album some free promotion. So far they've put up three streams:
Donald Byrd - Wind Parade (Windows Media Stream/
Real Media Stream)
This is one of the tracks that Evil Dee sampled for Black Moon's
Buck 'Em Down, and Warren G. used it a year later for Tupac's
Definition of a Thug.
Donald Byrd - Think Twice (Windows Media Stream/
Real Media Stream)
Several groups have flipped this sample in the past, but most of you will probably recognize it as the sample that J Dilla used on
Think Twice. It made the rounds on a few of the Native Tongues albums as well, including
A Tribe Called Quest's Footprints.
Lou Donaldson - It's Your Thing (Windows Media Stream/
Real Media Stream)
The first few notes on this song work so well for a hip hop track that most producers don't even bother cutting it up, they just sample it in its entirety. Most famously incorporated by Brand Nubian into
Punks Jump Up To Get Beat Down,
Prince Paul also used it on one of my favorite cuts from De La Soul's De La Soul Is Dead,
Bitties in the BK Lounge.
My favorite sample featured on the album (which unfortunately doesn't have an audio stream) is
Lou Donaldson's Who's Makin' Love To Your Old Lady. Marley Marl used it for the remix of
Craig G's Droppin' Science. It's probably my favorite Marley Marl beat, though it didn't make the cut on the original release of
In Control Vol. 1 (Craig G. has said in the past that he didn't even like the remix when he first heard it). Puffy and the Hitmen later jacked Marley's beat for the "Hip Hop" version of Biggie's
One More Chance (which itself got it's own remix, using Debarge's
Stay With Me).
You can preview the full Blue Note album for free online, over at
Blue Note Records' website. The album will be released on February 12th.
