Over the weekend, I received a promo for what was being touted as a new release from CL Smooth and Pete Rock. It seemed like pretty big news, as a reunion between the two has been long awaited by hip hop heads who have been reminiscing over their last full lp, which came out over a decade ago. Attached to the promo was a new track called "Multi Barz of Fury," with the Caramel King dropping lyrics over a Pete Rock-produced beat built around an Al Green sample (Let's Stay Together, I believe, but I could be wrong). Check it out:

Unfortunately, the likelihood of this being a precursor to a full-blown reunion album is slim, as it turns out this actually isn't a new song; this same verse from CL was making the rounds on various mixtapes over three years ago. Here's a snippet from an old DJ Wreckineyez mixtape, featuring CL's verse blended with the beat from Cool Breeze and Outkast's Watch for the Hook:

I'm not sure if the beat on the new version from Pete Rock is new, or if he just threw CL one of his leftover instrumentals so that the track could be rereleased on an official album, à la Petestrumentals. Regardless, I won't be getting my hopes up for a sequel to Main Ingredient any time soon.

You can purchase CL Smooth's three song EP, Multi Barz of Fury, over at hiphopsite.com.
