MLK:

Common - A Dream

If you (unlike me) are fortunate enough to have the day off from work tomorrow, take some time to read up and get familiar with the life of the man that we should all be celebrating. And if you're up for some further reading, I'm including a few links discussing the lengths to which the government went to discredit Martin Luther King, Jr. While the mainstream media will inevitably gloss over a lot of this material in favor of the more uplifting aspects of King's life, I think it's important to also remember just how much resistance our own government was putting up against the civil rights movement. 1968 wasn't all that long ago:

The Straight Dope's column on the accusations of MLK's plagiarism, philandering and alleged ties to communism

An overview of the FBI's illegal surveillance of MLK and how it parallels with the Bush administration's current wiretapping policies

The FBI's letter sent to MLK, urging him to commit suicide days before receiving his Nobel Peace Prize

All of the FBI documents on MLK that have been released under the Freedom of Information Act
