Another Pedestrian Post
Today we've got another rare track from my coworker Mike, Hip Hop Phenomenal by Jaybok the City Ace. As usual with these throwbacks, I don't have a whole lot of information to go along with this one. The song originally came out in 1987 under Zakia Records, a label best known for releasing Eric B. and Rakim's first single Eric B. Is President before the duo moved on to 4th & B'way to release Paid In Full. Virtually every other artist on Zakia hailed from New York, so I'm going to assume that's where Jaybok is from as well.

Ivan "DJ Doc" Rodriguez (previously mentioned here) is listed as the producer, and after hearing this track and his earlier work on My Christmas Bells, I'm going to make it a priority to hunt down more of his work. Spyder-D also gets a mention in the production credits. Check it out:

Jaybok the City Ace - Hip Hop Phenomenal

I've now listened to the track several times, and I'm still undecided as to whether or not Jaybok meant to refer to himself as a "Hip Hop Phenomenon." Jaybok also claims that he's a hip hop genius, however, so who am I to question his choice in words? Though, considering that the A-Side to this record is entitled My Masurati, it's a safe bet that whoever was doing the copy editing over at Zakia wasn't quite as phenomenal at his own job. Grammatical criticism aside, it's a dope song. If anyone has more info on Jaybok, please hit up the comments section.
