Ok, I promise this is the last American Gangster remix album that I will feature on this site (well, unless I get around to checking out those Ghostface/Jay-Z remixes). My man John, who hooked us up with that amazing anthology mix a few months ago, recently sent me a link to Real Live Gangster, a remix album from legendary Jersey producer K-Def. The album made the rounds over the holidays (From Da Bricks and unkut were up on it way before me), but if you haven't heard it yet you really need to go cop this one.
I would have recommended it just on the strength of K-Def's name, but as it turns out this is easily the best of the A.G. remixes. I know you've already heard me say that barely a week ago, but this time I really mean it! Taken as a whole, Real Live Gangster qualifies as one of the best sounding albums of '07, but even more noteworthy is the fact that K-Def has put together the best Jay-Z song I've heard since The Black Album, with his remix of Sweet. I wasn't a huge fan of the original soundtrack version of the song, but the beat that he remixes it with makes it sound like the kind of track that Jay-Z used to put out before he became more focused on managing Rihanna than his own career. It makes me think that Jay would be a lot better off in the future if he just handed his whole album off to one producer (my vote: K-Def or Premier) and let him give it a consistent sound.
