In case you haven't gotten your fill of American Gangster remix albums, Mick Boogie and European djs Shuko and The Gunna have just released the Brooklyn Soul mixtape. Joining Hov's vocals with classic Marvin Gaye melodies, the tape is the final release of 2007 for Mick Boogie, who managed to have a surprisingly prolific year despite the RIAA's "war on mixtapes."
The main hurdle that all of these remix albums have had to overcome is the fact that American Gangster just isn't as interesting as The Black Album. A mashup is only as good as its source material, and in this case Jay's vocals don't really do Marvin Gaye justice. Admittedly, Mick Boogie's effort on Brooklyn Soul surpasses all of the other takes on American Gangster that I've heard so far - with the possible exception of Benzi's American G-Funk - but I still haven't heard any remix that approaches the level of innovation that Danger Mouse came with on the Grey Album. That's not to say this mix isn't worth downloading, though; if you're a fan of either Jay-Z or Marvin Gaye, you're bound to find at least a couple of songs worth keeping in your collection.
To keep up with all of Mick Boogie's latest releases, drop by his music page and his blog (which actually has some interesting content, not always music-related).
