(Image - DJ Benzi remixes Jay-Z, American Gangster)
When it was announced that Jay-Z's concept album/soundtrack American Gangster would be rereleased in acapella form, I expected there to be a wave of remix albums similar to what happened with the Black Album. It's too soon to predict just how many attempts we'll see at remixing the album, but with the popularity of both Jay-Z and the mashup on the wane, it's unlikely that there will be anywhere near as many as the last time around (over 50 Black Album remixes at last count).

Less than two weeks after the release of the American Gangster acapellas, DJ Benzi, the man behind the Clipse's We Got The Remix (a great mixtape in its own right), can lay claim to being the first to remix the full album. Benzi has teamed up with The Knocks to release American G-Funk tomorrow (Friday).

Here are the first two tracks off of Benzi's tape (via low-bee):

Jigga and Skateboard P - I Know (Knocks remix) (mashed with David Bowie's Fame)

Jigga and Weezy - Hello Brooklyn (Knocks remix) (mashed with Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer

Fame has been used in a lot of hip hop mashups - none better than DJ Aristocat's blend with Mobb Deep's Shook Ones Pt. 2 - but in this case I think it works better than the original Neptunes beat. Based on Benzi's track record, it's a safe bet that the rest of the album will be worth a listen. You can cop the mixtape over at djbenzi.com tomorrow.

One other American Gangster remix album is in the works, American Godfather, which is being put together by Black Wall Street's DJ Skee. You can read more about that over at sohh.com. American Godfather will also be released on Friday, and you'll be able to download it over at Skee's myspace page.
