Blahzay Blahzay - Danger

For those of you of a certain age, you no doubt remember a brief period during the summer of '96 when Blahzay Blahzay, the duo of PF Cuttin and MC Out Loud (a.k.a. Blahz), had the rap game on lock with the single Danger and it's followup, Danger Part 2. I remember it came out about a month after Tupac's Hit 'Em Up was headlining virtually every new mixtape, just as the Bad Boy/Death Row beef was evolving into something that was more territorial than record label-related. Though the sample on Danger, a cut of Jeru The Damaja boasting When the East is in the house!, was more of a shoutout to Jeru's (and Blahzay's) hometown of East New York, everyone around my way embraced it as an East Coast anthem, seeing it as a response to the increasingly popular West Coast rap (whether or not that was the intended purpose for the song is, however, debatable).

I was reminded of Blahzay Blahzay earlier today, when I received two seperate promos related to the group. Neither of them are particularly good, but it's rare that I get a chance to link to Blahz. First up is a single off of Wyclef's upcoming album, Carnival Vol.II: Memoirs Of An Immigrant, which samples Danger:

Meanwhile Blahz himself, now solo after parting ways with PF Cuttin, is attempting to cash in on the nation's apparent demand for half-assed dance routines mixed with nonsensical rap, following in the footsteps of Souljah Boy with his latest song Dunkin Hinez. The single has been released in conjunction with a dance contest:

"Blahz, member of legendary Hip Hop group Blahzay Blahzay, is sponsoring a contest in honor of his new single "Dunkin Hinez." The contest allows students at grammar and high school located in the state of New York to submit their own video of the Dunkin Hinez dance. Video submissions will be taken between November 30th and December 30th, with the finalists being selected on January 5th, 2008 and the grand prize winner to be announced on January 10th." It's disappointing to see that this is what it's come to for Blahz, having to promote his music around a dance contest. Though he buries it beneath a lazy beat and a regrettable concept, there's enough here to convince me that he still has talent as an MC. It's a shame that his target demographic now seems to be the audience of 106 and Park. Should you be interested in submitting your own dance for the contest, you can find more details over at his website.

In other news, Zilla's released the latest episode of his ongoing podcast series. With cuts from Nas, Rakim and Saigon I would recommend it anyway, but the fact that he's thrown in a track from my man Chachi makes it required listening. Click here to download the podcast.
