Despite my misgivings about the marketing efforts behind Kanye West's Graduation, not to mention my instinctive distrust of any album with so much crossover appeal, I eventually relented and picked up a copy of the CD a couple of weeks ago. While I don't think it turned out to be as groundbreaking as some of the mainstream music reviews made it out to be, I must confess that I found myself enjoying it far more than I would have expected. There are a couple of songs on Graduation that have begun to grate on my ears, and at this point I've heard enough of T-Pain "singing" over Michael Jackson samples to last me a lifetime. Having accepted it for what it is, though - an album intended for as broad an audience as possible - there's not a whole lot that I can find fault with it.
With that said, though, I certainly understand why some members of the hip hop community (I see you, Flood) have not embraced the album. Perhaps Mick Boogie's new mixtape, The Graduate, featuring remixes of tracks from all three of Kanye's albums by 9th Wonder along with Terry Urban, will win him a few fans among the True School heads. Most of the songs are still hipster-friendly, but there's at least a hint of boom bap rap in a few of the remixes. Here are two songs from the mixtape:
