You might not expect it from looking at that photo, but the kid pictured above has quietly been putting together some incredible beats over the past couple of years. While most aspiring producers begin their musical careers with a drum set and a sampler, Deacon LF started out playing the trumpet before learning how to make beats from a Latin Jazz Instructor. Not the traditional background for a hip hop beat maker, but Deacon LF's beats aren't exactly traditional, either. Breaking out from the standard sources for samples that most hip hop production relies on, Deacon uses everything from jazz guitar to organs to E-40 samples (and, if I'm not mistaken, a xylophone even makes an appearance on one of his tracks).

If there is one mainstream producer out there that he does sound like, it would have to be DJ Shadow in the days before he fell in love with Hyphy (one of the tracks below, Abrasive Alibi, has a definite Private Press sound to it). Perhaps that's not too surprising, as Deacon currently goes to school in the Bay Area, the home of DJ Shadow, and has undoubtedly been influenced by the music scene out there. Admittedly, he's got a ways to go before he reaches Shadow's level, but he certainly seems to have the creativity and talent to make a name for himself one day.

Take a listen to two of his instrumentals:
