My man Scholar over at Souled On Music recently asked me to contribute to the series of guest blogs that he's been running on his site. For those of you who do not frequent SouledOn (and if you don't, as Clinton Sparks would say, "Get Familiar!"), it's one of the rare music blogs that manages to cater to both hardcore crate diggers and casual hip hop fans. It's a great blog, so go check it out!

Update: Here's a link to the post on SouledOn.

For my guest post, I put together a fairly random sampling of tracks of various rappers recorded before they became famous. Highlights include: Dr. Dre in his mascara days, Jay-Z during his Hawaiian phase, Lupe Fiasco's brief stint as a drug dealer (on wax), a pre-N.W.A. Ice Cube and a surprisingly laid-back song from Onyx. It's sort of like a hip hop edition of Before They Were Stars.

The post should be going up sometime either later tonight or tomorrow, so keep an eye out for that (or just wait until I update this post with a direct link to it). In the meantime, here are two of Jay-Z's pre-Roc-A-Fella verses that I originally intended to include with the post, but for various reasons ended up cutting out:

Jay-Z - Show N Prove

Jay-Z and Original Flavor - Many Styles

That first track is Jay's verse from a song that he did with Big Daddy Kane, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Shyheim, Sauce Money and Big Scoob. The second verse is from a song that Jay did on Original Flavor's album Beyond Flavor. Original Flavor is the group that Dame Dash was working with before he and Jay hooked up to form Roc-A-Fella.
