This is my lame attempt at a "Beastie Boys/X-men" mashup image. Due to the threat of legal action from Marvel Comics, the dj crew is now officially known as the "X-Ecutioners" (a name which, as all my fellow nerds know, was also jacked from Marvel), but I'll always think of them as the X-Men.
The latest mashup album to hit the internet comes in the form of an unlikely pairing between the Beastie Boys and the X-Men a.k.a. The X-Ecutioners, from Ireland's DJ Zap. I was pretty excited about this album, entitled Represent New York, as I hadn't really heard anything new from the X-Men since Mista Sinista left the group a couple of years ago (they've since added twonew members). While the beats taken from the various X-Men albums are all on point, the vocals, from the Beastie Boys' more recent work, come up a bit short. I'm personally not a huge fan of the stuff that the Beasties have released since Ill Communication, though, so I may not be the target audience for this mashup.
As it is, DJ Zap does a pretty good job on the technical side of things. The beats match up well with the vocals, the concept's original, and for fans of either group it's worth a listen. It just feels like this whole thing could have been a lot more interesting had Zap used some of the Beasties' more classic material. However, if you can find a copy of the mashup album, by all means give it a listen. There are at least a few tracks worth your time.
