As a few of you know, over the past year I've been negotiating with several rappers from New Jersey to get them to work with me on a new mixtape. The concept behind the tape was to be a history of NJ hip hop, from the early days of Big Bank Hank, Chill Rob G and Ice-T (Summit, NJ!) to the golden age of the Fugees, Artifacts and Redman to the current group of unsigned rappers like Nucci Reyo. By the start of this summer I had gotten a handful of relatively high profile rappers on board for the project, but like my man Yeats said, "things fall apart." Long story short, things become a lot more complicated once reps from the record labels get involved. What was once intended to be an "official" mixtape will probably end up being similar to the last mixtape I put together, with a slightly bigger budget - which is to say that there probably won't be any celebrity guest appearances, but it should still be dope.
I'm not planning on putting the tape out until the end of the summer, so there's still a chance I can get a few artists on board. If any of you reading this know any rappers or producers from Jersey (signed or unsigned) who are looking for an outlet for their music, tell them to hit me up (mrjones AT 33jones.com).
I'll have more details about the mix in the coming weeks, but mainly I was just looking for an excuse to post up the cover art for the tape which I just received today. Big thanks to my man djeff for doing the artwork (go check out his portfolio on deviantART). As you should all recognize, it's based on the poster for the classic New Jersey Drive.
Because I'm feeling so Jersey right now, here are a couple of old Budden mixtape tracks:
