Since most of you reading this know more about Skyzoo than I do, I won't bother writing up a lengthy bio of this dude. For those that aren't familiar with him, Skyzoo is a Brooklyn rapper who's perhaps most famous for recording his album
Cloud 9 in just three days. A lot of reviewers have suggested that he sounds like a young version of Jay-Z, but to me he sounds more like Styles P -- vocally, anyway.
Sky seems to have an appreciation of the rappers and producers that came before him, giving shoutouts on
Corner Store Classic to Pete Rock, B.D.P. and Brand Nubian, dropping a remix with Sean Price and rapping over an old Dilla beat. A lot of the latest generation of mixtape rappers just jack beats and keep it moving, but it's nice to hear at least one of these young bloods giving props where they're due.
As for the mix itself, there are some nice tracks on here that should serve as a good introduction for those who aren't familiar with Skyzoo. I was a bit worried when I saw that Kay Slay was "hosting" the tape, but his talking segments only last for about one minute total, so with just the right amount of fast forwarding you won't even notice him. Mick Boogie, the real dj behind the mix, puts in another solid effort and makes up for that
awful Al Fatz mixtape he put out last month.
Two tracks off of
Corner Store Classic:
Skyzoo - Straighten It Out
Skyzoo - Hold Tight
