A few weeks ago, indie label Embedded Music sent me some tracks from Iller Than Theirs, a group that they had just signed. I had heard a couple of the other artists that were on Embedded, and they were all a little more underground than what I usually check for. Not that I don't occasionally strap on the backpack and get my boom-bap on, but the fact that I had never heard of Tone Tank and Krayo, the two members of Iller Than Theirs, only increased my trepidation when I gave their songs a listen.

As it turns out, the two tracks I got a chance to listen to were quite good. The Brooklyn-based duo benefit from some great beats courtesy of J. Howells Werthman, with one song built around a Ghostface sample from Back Like That (which is perhaps the only good thing to come out of that Ghostface/Ne-Yo collaboration). Lyrically, they sound about like what you'd expect from underground NY rappers, which is to say that if you're into anything that's ever been released on Def Jux it's a safe bet that that you'll be into Iller Than Theirs. They might not be quite up to Rakim's level on the mic, but they do manage to drop a few nice lines throughout. Cool Calm Pete, however, steals the show when he drops by for a guest verse on It Is What It Is.

Here are two tracks off of Iller Than Their's upcoming self-titled LP, due out this fall:

Iller Than Theirs feat. Cool Calm Pete - It Is What It Is

Iller Than Theirs - To Be ILL

One final announcement: you've only got 24 hours left to sign up for the free Pharaohe Monch cds!
