While there are a few hip hop tracks celebrating motherhood, there really aren't any rap songs that do the same for the fathers. In fact, when I first started thinking about what tracks to put up for Father's Day, the first two tracks that came to mind were more focused on absentee dads: Pete Rock and CL Smooth's They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.) and Shaquille's Biological Didn't Bother, which samples T.R.O.Y.

Were I a sociologist, I suppose I could argue that the lack of a hip hop anthem for fatherhood is most likely the result of the single-mother households that a fair amount of rappers were raised in. Or maybe rapping about fathers just doesn't sell records these days.

In any event, the best track I could come up with for Father's Day is Nas' Bridging the Gap (the Youtube video above), featuring his father Olu Dara. Olu first worked with his son on Illmatic, playing the trumpet on Life's a Bitch:

Happy Father's Day!
