As I've said before on this site, I'm not a huge fan of T.I. While I don't dislike most of his songs, I've never been able to get all that excited about them either. I suspect a fair amount of my ambivalence towards T.I., the rapper, stems from my ambivalence towards T.I., the man. While it's certainly commendable that he has gotten involved in various charities over the past few years, I'm unable to overlook the fact that this is the same man who, not all that long ago, was dealing crack to the very neighborhoods that he is now helping to rebuild through his charitable efforts. Perhaps it all balances out in the grand scheme of things, but I've never been able to get behind his public image as the drug dealer turned community leader.
Of course, a fair amount of my cd collection contains the work of artists with some sort of criminal record - Chi Ali, James Brown and DMX are just a few that come to my mind - so perhaps it isn't entirely rational for me to single T.I. out. It would probably be harder for me to dismiss T.I. due to his checkered past if I were more impressed with his lyrical abilities. His flow is decent, but nothing about it really sticks out for me, and I don't think he's ever earned his self-proclaimed title of "King of the South."
In any event, one redeeming quality of T.I.'s music is the fact that his vocals have provided the source for a steady stream of great remixes. As some of you may recall, I posted a remix from
Ross Hogg a few months ago that was well received. For today, I've got two new remixes.
The first, taking T.I.'s vocals from
What You Know and blending them with "blog house" favorites
Justice, comes from Boston's
Red Foxxworth:
Red Foxxworth - What You Know about the Waters of Nazareth
The second remix comes from my man Griff, of J-Direct and Rhyme City Records:
Griff - Big Shit Poppin' Remix
