About a week ago, I told my man Joe that I would do a post on Lil' Flip. Joe's regrettable taste in music doesn't end with Cloverland's favorite rapper, though. He's also into bad 80's music. It was hard tracking down a song that managed to combine the two, but I was able to come up with something:
Lil' Flip's Tribute to VA Tech
Rapping over the beat from Cyndi Lauper's
Time After Time, Flip gives a surprising tribute to the victims of last week's shooting at Virginia Tech. The song isn't going to be burning up the request lines at TRL anytime soon, and his boasting at the end of the song that he's "The #1 Fly Boy" takes a little bit away from the spirit of the whole thing, but it at least shows some social awareness, something hip hop could use more of these days.
Lil Flip's not the only rapper to put out a song about the shootings. Jin also did a tribute,
which you can hear on his MySpace page.
Both songs sound like they were put together rather quickly, so you have to wonder how much of this is a sincere response to the shootings and how much of it is an attempt to get some attention from the media. The optimist in me is inclined to think that they both had good intentions, but the whole thing seems strange to me. Maybe its just part of Flip's grieving process, but was it really necessary for him to drop a line referencing his new album?
