It seems like I may have spoken too soon when I mentioned yesterday that Jojo Pellegrino had suffered another setback in his seven year quest to release an album. For those who haven't been keeping track at home, Jojo was originally signed to Violator Records in 2000 after tearing up the mixtape scene. Shortly after his signing, Violator and its distributor, Loud Records, went out of business, leaving Jojo with a completed album but no outlet for it.
In 2006, Joey announced that he had received financial backing to start up his own independent label, Pellegrino Records. He put up a website and the requisite MySpace page and released a promotional mixtape in advance of the album. At some point in the past two months, though, his site had been taken down by his webhost. I presumed that this was a sign that his label had folded -- this seemed to be confirmed by the fact that all references to the label had been removed from his MySpace page at the same time. However, I checked his website again last night after posting the Marco Polo review, and what do you know? Its back up, with a couple of new tracks. There's even a notice stating that Joey's hooked back up with his original manager from Violator.
He still doesn't have a release date for the album itself, but this does seem to be a sign that he's making progress. I was planning on researching this whole thing, but I've spent most of the evening
transfixed to the television (I don't have anything profound to say about the shootings, so I won't even bother trying).
Anyway, I was really just looking for an excuse to post a couple of Pellegrino tracks. These are off of the Pellafreestyles mixtape, which
I've mentioned before.

If you haven't heard any of his stuff before, its definitely worth hunting down some of his old mixtapes. In my opinion, he'd easily be one of the best MCs out right now if he could just manage to get an official release out on the shelves. As it is, a lot of cats don't even know who he is, which is a damn shame.
To hear a few more of his tracks,
stop by his MySpace page and then head over to
his website.
