It seems like every year there is one singer that gets almost universal acceptance from the wide world of music sites, from online magazines to blogs. 2006, for example, saw Lily Allen championed by many as the greatest musical act to come out of England since the British Invasion of the Sixties (interestingly enough, her Wikipedia page is currently saying that she's checked into an STD clinic "dealing with a severe case of chlamydia" -- good to see the editing process over at Wikipedia is working). I'm always hesitant to check for the Internet's latest flavor-of-the-month singer because they rarely live up to the hype.

In the case of this year's blog favorite,
Amy Winehouse, I was particularly uninterested in checking her out because it seemed like most of the articles I read about her were more focused on her personal life than any musical talent she might have had. Whether it was one of her drunken episodes - throwing up on stage in the middle of a song during a particularly rough bender, showing up for an interview covered in cuts and bruises after drunkenly stumbling through the streets of Manhattan, etc. - or her alleged anorexia, it seemed more like she was getting ready to promote a reality tv series on VH1 than an album worth listening to.

I've recently had to change my stance on Amy Winehouse after she did a song with Ghostface, I'm No Good. If I were the cynical type, I would have said that was the perfect move to gain even more favor among hipster bloggers, but I have to admit that the song was quite good. Her vocal ability, at least on the handful of tracks I've listened to, blow most of the R&B singers that have appeared on the scene in the last few years out of the water. Her latest single, Rehab (a mocking reference to her alleged alcoholism), has just been released as a remix with Pharaoh Monche. I can't say I would have expected the styles of Monche and Winehouse to work well together, but they do. Check it out:

Pharaoh Monche's new album Desire will be released on June 25th.
