As you all know, I'm a sucker for free mixtapes, so when I found out
Rich London had released his fourth mixtape I had to check it out. Creatively titled
Mixtape Vol. 4, Rich London once again delivers a free tape that sounds better than a fair amount of commercial albums out there. For those of you who haven't heard him before, I'd describe him as sounding similar to the Queensbridge-based hip hop that was coming out in the mid-90's, with slightly less gun talk and a few motivational messages thrown in for good measure. Which is kind of what I'd expect a Canadian interpretation of Mobb Deep to sound like. Maybe that's a stretch, but his style reminds me a lot of Cormega, Big Noyd and the rest of the QB rappers from back in the day. Just less threatening.
Two tracks from his latest mixtape:
Blessed to be Gifted
Second Produc
For those wondering, the piano sample on that last song ("Second Produc" is the name on the tracklist, though I'm not sure if that's really the name of the track) comes from O.V. Wright's
Let's Straighten It Out, previously used by Rza on Wu-Tang's AIDS-awareness anthem,
America Is Dying Slowly.
