Some underground Canadian rap for today, via Vancouver's
DJ Neoteric, the man behind one of the
best hip hop mixes in recent memory. His latest mix is a twenty-five track sampler of various artists featured on indie label Futility Records.
The beats on the
Futility Sampler are solid throughout. As with a fair amount of underground rap, though, the lyrics are hit or miss. When it all comes together -- as on the two tracks I'm putting up today -- the result is pretty good. Have a listen:
Moked Out - Moka Only
Random verse - Birdapres
You can download the full Futility records sampler
over here (direct link to .zip file on futilityrecords.com). If you like what you hear, you can find out more information on Futility's artists
at the label's website.
Speaking of indie artists, the 33 Jones-approved group Clean Guns have just released their latest mixtape,
Living In Harmony. Zilla (a.k.a. Rap Jack Bauer a.k.a. one of our top commenters) is currently selling copies on his
MySpace page, though it will be available on iTunes soon. I have no doubt its worth copping, but in case you need more motivation to part with the five dollars he's charging I'm planning on putting together a proper post on it in a week or two. Check back soon for that.
Finally, one more Canadian hip hop link:
Behind the scenes at the video shoot for the latest Marco Polo track featuring Masta Ace. The video doesn't have the full song -- only about 45 seconds of it near the beginning of the video -- but it sounds dope.
