Work kept me crazy busy today, so I'm just going to post a few tracks that came into my inbox this afternoon. These mp3s come courtesy of two p.r. reps that work for the record labels. In a way, I feel like I've become a cog in their marketing campaign, but as long as they keep giving me free mp3s to share I guess its all good. The tracks:

Joell Ortiz - Hip Hop
From Joell Ortiz's debut album Port Authority, coming May 15th on Rawkus.

Prodigy featuring Un Pacino - 7th Heaven
From Prodigy's mixtape Return of the Mac, due out on March 27th from Koch (record labels are releasing mixtapes now?).

Both of these songs made the rounds on the internet about a month ago (I may even have put up a streaming version of the Ortiz track earlier), though I didn't pay much attention when I first heard them. Prodigy had fallen off completely since signing with G-Unit, so I didn't expect anything out of him. Yet this track sounds a lot better than anything else he's put out in the last couple of years (though I'm not really feeling the other single that just came out, Stuck On You). Lyrically, he's still a shadow of his former self - his rhymes on Infamous were some of the coldest, most cinematic rhymes you'll ever hear -- but at least he seems to have improved his selection of beats this time around.

As for Joell Ortiz, I've admittedly been hesitant to jump on his bandwagon after reading several other East Coast blogs proclaim him as the savior of NY hip hop. He's certainly more entertaining than the other current "savior" of New York, Papoose, but that's not enough to warrant the hype. At least not yet -- I'll wait until I hear the full album before judging. This song's a good start, though.

One more track:

Stephen Marley featuring Mos Def - Hey Baby (Windows Media Stream)
From Marley's album Mind Control, due out on March 20th.
