I know that for most of you, the concept of the mashup has been played out since about 2005, if you were even into them back then. There are still a few djs out there, however, that continue to create hip hop mashups that are worth listening to. Though there are numerous bedroom djs pumping out mashups on the regular, only a few are putting out tracks that are as good as, or in some cases better than, the original tracks that they are based on. Among the standouts, DJ Swindle's
Bobb Deep, joining Mobb Deep with Bob Marley, remains one of my favorite albums, mashup or otherwise. Former Cypress Hill DJ Muggs has succesfully made the transition from traditional hip hop to mashups, with his
Mash-Up Radio Show.
The king of the modern hip hop mashup album, though, is undoubtedly California-based DJ Aristocat. With his latest cd,
Unnatural Selection, he has now released six full albums.
Unnatural Selection features several unexpected combinations, from Nas'
It Ain't Hard To Tell joined with the Yardbirds'
For Your Love to an Outkast/Blink 182 combo that works surprisingly well. This album isn't for those of you who are only checking for traditional hip hop, but if you're looking for a creative take on the genre, its worth picking up.
A couple of tracks from the album:
Norah Jones vs. East Flatbush Project\
Jurassic 5 vs. Breakestra
You can buy DJ Aristocat's
Unnatural Selection over at his website, djaristocat.com. If you've never heard any of Aristocat's work before, I recommend also picking up
Some Things Old, Some Things New, which in my opinion is his best cd.
