A few days ago, I was sent a copy of DJ Jus Ske's latest mixtape,
Parrell: My Mind Is Playin' Tricks On Me. Between the Super Bowl,
a set of DVDs I just picked up and the latest episode of the White Rapper Show ("She need a grown ass man. That's a hit, yo!"), I didn't have enough free time to give this thing a full listen until this morning. So I'm a little late on this, but I'm guessing at least a few of you haven't heard about it yet.
On
My Mind Is..., Jus Ske mashes up a variety of beats, from old school hip hop to current emo-rock, with the vocals from Pharrell's debut solo album
In My Mind. As with most mashup albums, when the source material isn't very good (and Pharrell's debut wasn't), there's not a whole lot of replay value once the novelty wears off. The songs that have the best chance of making the cut for your iPod -- and there are a few worthy of replay -- are the ones built around hip hop beats that you should be very familiar with. The rest, including one track that uses the instrumental from
Blur's Song No. 2, often have vocals that are sped-up to ridiculous heights in an attempt to match the beat. If you thought Pharrell's rapping was bad before, wait until you hear it at 78 RPM. Having said that, this mashup album is at least as entertaining as the original version of
In My Mind. It may not be as polished, but its certainly more interesting. And its free.
A couple of tracks from the tape:
Can I have it like Rakim and Naughty By Nature?
