With the Super Bowl just a couple of days away, I thought this would be a good time to spotlight a few of the rap songs that have come out of the NFL. The National Football League hasn't put out quite as many hip hop records as the NBA - and there's no gridiron equivalent of
Shaq Fu - but there has still been a surprising amount of rap songs performed by professional football players. Perhaps the most prolific NFL MC, former wide receiver Andre Rison, is sadly missing from the following list. Though he's appeared in songs with Foxy Brown and Eightball and MJG among others, I couldn't find any of his songs on the internet. The best of the rest (all YouTube links):
Chicago Bears - Superbowl Shuffle
The song that got the NFL/Hip Hop ball rolling, the Bears were somehow received a Grammy nomination for this song. They ended up losing to Prince, but by that point the damage had been done. The popularity of this song convinced many future NFLers that it was ok for them to grab a mic and make fools of themselves. Due to an overzealous copyright owner, I had to link to a "remake" of the video rather than the original, featuring three people who have about as much rhythm as Jim McMahon.
Mike Ditka and the Grabowskis - Untitled
You may have noticed that legendary Bears coach Mike Ditka was missing from the Super Bowl Shuffle lineup. Luckily, Coach decided to record a sequel. The name Grabowski comes from this Ditka quote: "There are teams that are fair-haired, and those that aren't so fair-haired. Some teams are named Smith, some Grabowski. We're Grabowskis!"
San Francisco 49ers - Team of the Eighties
Featuring a group of 49ers from the mid-eighties, including Wide Receiver/Dancing with the Stars castmember Jerry Rice, this is probably the low point of NFL rap. "I got a whole lotta sissies on my back / And you can do what you want 'cause I ain't going down Jack!"
Deion Sanders - Must Be The Money
Playing the role of NFL cornerback turned braggadocious pimp on his first, and last, album, Deion Sanders gives us this ode to gold digging women. Primetime keeps it real with the line: "My hair is done, and my fingernails too / Six pack goes down, and I don't know what to do."
Crucial Conflict - Monsters of Midway
Chicago fastrappers Crucial Conflict, last seen
smokin' on Hay in the middle of the barn, recently put together this anthem for the Chicago Bears' trip to the Super Bowl. Its the most polished song on today's list, for whatever that's worth.
Dr. H - Damn it Feels Good to have Peyton
A diehard Colts' fan's interpretation of the Gheto Boys
Damn it feels Good to be a Gangsta.
And though its more related to college football than the NFL, any post on pigskin-themed hip hop would be missing something without mentioning this:
Heizman Boys - Do Da Heizman on Dat Ho (also be sure to check out Albany State's Marching Band
performing the song - fast forward to the 2:45 mark)
