Earlier this week, there was a post over at Different Kitchen that mentioned a rapper named Plies from Fort Myers, Florida. I had heard a couple of his songs before, but the production on them sounded a little too much like the generic casio beats that certain Southern artists seem to be plagued with. After the Kitchen co-sign, I decided to give Plies another chance and picked up his latest mixtape, The Truth Hurts with DJ Scream.

The tape itself is a mixed bag. About half of the tracks are filled with the kind of instrumentals you'd hear on a bootleg D4L single. There's also an absolutely regrettable ode to foreplay and digital insertion, Get U Wet, with Pretty Ricky (par for the course for them, though). There are some bright spots, however. Plies isn't particularly strong on the lyrical side of things - and most of his material focuses on the same drugs, guns and money fantasies that you've heard plenty of times before - but his flow on the mic makes up for it. He may not be talking about anything worthwhile, but at least he makes it easy on the ears. Not a ringing endorsement of the man, admittedly, but if you're into Southern rap then you might want to start checking for this dude. There are also a few tracks with Trick Daddy on here that should keep the 305 area code happy.

Speaking of Florida rappers, Jacksonville's Swordz (previously discussed here) was a recent finalist for YouTube's Underground Contest. Here's his entry, the video for Weatherman.
