As you've no doubt heard by now,
James Brown, Soul Brother Number One, passed away yesterday. There's so much of James Brown's music that has been sampled by hip hop that it would take me weeks to do a proper tribute to the man and his work, so I'm just going to focus on one song,
The Funky Drummer, which includes a drum solo by Clyde Stubblefield that is the most sampled recording ever. Take a listen to it:
Funky Drummer breakbeat
There are an almost endless amount of songs that have sampled The Funky Drummer over the years (you can search for them all at
The Breaks), but here are what I consider the Top Ten (in no particular order):
Public Enemy: Fight The Power
Public Enemy: Bring The Noise
NWA: Fuck tha Police
Beastie Boys: Shadrach
Digable Planets: Where I'm From
Run DMC: Run's House
Dr. Dre: Let Me Ride
Kwame: The Rhythm
LL Cool J: Boomin' System
Eric B. And Rakim: Paid In Full
The list of the songs that sampled the Funky Drummer had a few surprises in it, as well. From Vanilla Ice to Trent Reznor, there were some unexpected names appearing on the list. Here are a few artists that I wouldn't have guessed used it:
Nine Inch Nails: Piggy
Milli Vanilli: Girl You Know Its True
Kris Kross: Jump
