I'm not a big fan of DJ Whoo Kid -- he can't blend or scratch, he overuses his "Whooooo Kidddddd" voice drop and puts way too many Tony Yayo tracks on his mixtapes -- but I had to pick up his latest release when I saw that comedian Katt Williams was featured on it. Ever since it was announced that he had signed with Dipset, I was curious to see if Katt could actually rap or if this was just a gimmick. After listening to the tracks on
POW! Radio Volume 5, its clear he's just a gimmick.
Instead of just rapping as himself, Katt Williams plays the fake pimp role of
Money Mike, the character he developed for
Friday After Next. While most rappers adopt a persona of some sort (ex: coke dealer turned MC), its rare that an album built around a comedic caricature ends up being worth listening to. In fact, the only album I can think of when that worked was D-Dot Angeletti's turn as the Madd Rapper on
Tell 'Em Why U Madd.
One of the Katt Williams tracks on the mixtape is a diss record aimed at comedian
Rickey Smiley and a few others. This is now the second diss record he's put out since signing with Dipset, as he previously released a track with The Game taking shots at the Young Gunz after they called his alter ego, Money Mike, "a fake ass pimp" on
Set It Off (you can hear Katt's response to that on
his MySpace page). Here's the Rickey Smiley track, in which Katt claims Rickey has been stealing jokes from other comedians:

This next track is a freestyle he did on G-Unit radio, talking about
Gravy's gunshot wound. I will admit this one is kind of funny, but Katt still sounds pretty awkward behind a mic:

On another note, if you're looking for some good Christmas music (and no,
this is not good Christmas music), Peanut Butter Wolf has put together a mix for Stones Throw Records.
Download it for free here. The hour long mix has Christmas-themed music performed by everyone from Bob Marley to James Brown to The Cold Crew.
