Over the summer, back when Gillie Da Kid was doing his best to
make a career out of dissing Lil Wayne, DJ Drama announced that he was working on a mixtape with an artist named "Willie the Kid," who was signed to his AMG record label. Due to the similarity in names, a lot of people (myself included) thought Drama had gotten involved in the Gillie/Wayne beef. Turns out Drama was talking about Willie The Kid, out of Grand Rapids, Michigan, the younger brother of Wu-Tang associate
LA The Darkman.
I had forgotten about the whole thing until yesterday, when I saw that Drama and Willie the Kid had just released a new mixtape,
Divide and Conquer. After a quick listen to the tape, the Kid has some potential. He's not breaking any new ground lyrically -- mostly drugs and gun talk here -- but his flow is pretty nice.
Its always hard to get a feel for a new rapper on tapes like this, when the majority of the beats used are from other rappers' songs. A real test for a rapper is whether or not he can kill a beat that you've never heard before. Willie never really does that on this tape, and his older brother LA ends up stealing the show with his guest verses, but he does show enough potential to suggest that he might eventually outgrow the label of "mixtape rapper."

Willie the Kid will be releasing an official album in 2007, which is scheduled to be the first release for Drama's Aphilliates Music Group. You can pick up
